Synopsis

Mo has spent his entire life chasing a dream: to be a screenwriter. A dream, he’s rapidly losing grasp of. With another false promise crushed by film producer; Michael Gordon. Enough is enough. Forced to look for a day job by his now estranged girlfriend and mother to their four month old daughter, Mo secures a job as ‘handyman’ for cantankerous Walter Clarke; a brash ageing soul who never fails to push Mo to the absolute edge.

With Mo on the cusp of giving up everything he’s worked so hard far; Walter presents Mo with a lifeline he just can’t refuse; but not everything is as straightforward as it seems...

For aspiring screenwriter Mo, and his unlikely mentor, Walter, it’s the beginning of an unconventional journey in pursuit of one man’s Dream.

There is something raw, visceral and real in the way that Simon Powell writes that instantly connects you to his scripts. With Nebula, we find ourselves utterly immersed in the life of our protagonist (Mo) who makes the ultimate noble sacrifice. He gives-up on his dreams to find a job so that he can support his estranged girlfriend and their daughter. An unlikely friendship ensues with a terse and blunt character (Cecilia Clarke), a woman of a certain age who takes Mo on the most unlikely journey of friendship, discovery and eventually to a turning point in his life that you would never expect. This is a story that will take an audience through their full gamut of emotions- there is humour, love, pain, sadness, poignancy and- most of all- humanity. Films are a natural reflection and caricature of reality, and Nebula reflects those dilemmas and choices we have all made in our lives around which path to take, which dream to pursue, and what we are here for. Without exception, every single one of us has shed a tear reading this script, as it makes that unique, deep connection with our own lives through Simon's brilliant storytelling and sharp dialogue with script pieces which - individually could make inspiring quotes in their own right. "I won't just join in with the rest of the world, I can't just exist.

Great stories attract great talent, and Nebula is no exception. We are immensely proud to have assembled some of the most creative, experienced and talented individuals in independent cinema to make the project a success, and through all of this we have made a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion. The creative industries have a responsibility to represent and empower communities and groups, and we take that responsibility seriously - and from our cast, to production and support we will do everything in our power and capability to ensure diversity is present and visible. It is after all a diversity of background, views, thoughts and methods that creates great art. Nebula isn't new; this is a script Simon has refined in collaboration with all of us over the best part of half a decade, but there has never been a more important time than we have right now to turn Nebula into a reality. Today's world needs a story of hope where anyone can become someone, where our faith in ourselves is rewarded, and where hope does not get wasted. That is Nebula
